Croydon – Broad Green and the Whitehorse Road

Many of our Croydon relatives/antecedents lived in this area.  The key below provides more information.  In 1861 much of this area was described as Norwood.

The Carters and Luetchfords were very much based around Broad Green/Christ Church (5).  William Henry Quinton was based around here too, and in later times Frank Baker #2 and family.

Otherwise the Bakers and Langridges were based more in the area at the foot of the Whitehorse Road (21). Similarly for the other Quintons and the Gibbs, but they also drifted northwards up to Pawsons Road and the surrounding area (13/14).

Sutherland Road

Lucy Carter and her children lived at 65 from WW1 to the 1960s.

Pemdevon Road

Frank Baker #3 grew up at 121.

Greenside Road

Arthur Carter Snr and family moved to 86 during WW1;

Mitcham Road

Henry Carter's bakery was at 128 until the mid-1900s.

Sumner Road

William Luetchford's children were born at 44/91. Edith Clement nee Carter and family were at 50 in 1901. Christ Church is also on Sumner Road.

Cavendish Road

Joe and Alice Carter lived at 2, then 7, from 1928 to 1956.

Handcroft Road

William Henry Quinton, Gunmaker, and family lived here from the 1870s; son Alfred and family lived at 25 in 1881. Henrietta Scott nee Luetchford moved to 91 from St James Terrace around 1875 - her husband was also a Whitesmith.

St James Terrace

Thomas Luetchford moved here before 1861 from Carshalton, and stayed until he and his wife Harriet died mid 1870s; daughter Henrietta and family also lived here with them.

Windmill Bridge

Fred and Amy Langridge lived here in 1881, and Frank Baker #2 was born here in 1884.

Strathmore Road

Frank Baker #2 was living at 70 at the time of his wedding. Sarah Ann Gibbs lived at 58 in 1901. Mary (Polly) Quinton was living at 70 when she married in 1902.

Willis Road

James Gibbs and family lived at 13 in the 1880s/1890s.

Union Road

Henrietta Scott nee Luetchford lived at 11 in the 1890s/1900s; Kit Quinton was born at 14 in 1886.

Princess Road

Albert and Mary Ann Quinton lived at 38/40 in the 1890s.

Lion Road/Pawsons Road

Mary Ann Quinton and children were at 4 Lion Road in 1901.  Sarah Gibbs nee Brice lived at 150 Pawsons Road in 1901.  Nellie Dale nee Quinton lived at 160 Pawsons Road during much of the 20th C.

Frant Road

Mary Ann Hellard and Kit Quinton lived here from about 1907 and through WW1.

Raymead Avenue

Julian Baker was born at 34, moving away in 1953.

Westbury Road

Frank Baker #2 was living at 28 in 1907.

George and Mary Brice were at 19 in 1871.

Kidderminster Road

Bobs Luetchford lived at 24 in the 1940s/1950s.

Lahore Road

Catherine Eliza Blanthorn nee Gibbs and family were at 34 in 1891.

Whitehorse Road

Frank Baker #1 lived at 265 c1911 we believe.  George A Gibbs and family were at 318 in 1891.

Johnson Road

Frank Baker #2 and Kit Quinton were married at the Mission Hall in 1907

Grafton Road

The Carters moved here in the 1900s after giving up the bakery, before moving to Sutherland Road.

Southwell Road

Tom R Luetchford lived here with wife Rosetta in the 1910s.

Gloucester Road

Edward Bates/Luetchford was living with wife Jane at 190 in 1881.  Fred and Amy Langridge were at 2 Bridge Place on the Gloucester Road from before 1891 until Amy's death in 1905.

Dagnall Road

George Brice lived here in 1850 – the area was described as the Common.
