The Kynaston connection

Kynaston - 2 Bensham Vilas Croydon

This picture is taken from a book of old photographs of Norbury, Thornton Heath and Broad Green.  The caption states:

Robert Kynaston and his family lived at 2 Bensham Villas, 236 London Road.  He died in 1874 but the family continued to live there until 1923.  One of the daughters, Beatrice, was an accomplished photographer and a number of her photographs appear in this book.  Their house, along with the remainder of these fine villas between Campbell Road and Broad Green Avenue were demolished in the late 1970s to make way for City House, the UK headquarters of Philips Electronics

There has been a significant and ongoing Baker-Carter family connection with this family and this house.

Elizabeth Danns Rose was a children's nurse in service to the Kynaston's at the time of the 1871 census.  Her sister Alice Rose was a Lady's Maid in the same household at the time of the 1881 census.

Miss Bertha (b 1868) and Miss Beatrice (b 1872) Kynaston used to visit Gran Luetchford (Elizabeth Danns Rose), probably twice a year, at Cavendish Road.  "Hello, Rose" they said, proprietarily, as they breezed in.  The sisters lived in Dorking after they left Croydon.

The Kynastons used to attend the Parish Church (although they lived up by Broad Green). Tom Luetchford (1911-2005) recalled the Kynastons walking down Handcroft Road to the Parish Church, while he was waiting outside Christ Church, waiting to go into Sunday school.

Tom's father worked for the Kynastons for a short while – possibly his first job. His younger brother Charlie Luetchford also did – as a "boot boy".

The Kynaston's house in London Road was taken over by Pitmans College – Frank Baker #3 went to that Pitmans.

When the building was later demolished and replaced by a new building for Phillips, one of Joe Carter's nephews worked there.
