Links

The wonder of the web and the myriad links!  Here's some good, mostly free, genealogical links (links open in new window):

RootsChat logo

RootsChat is an excellent message board site - who knows someone might be able to do that look-up for you at the other end of the country to where you live.  One of the major strengths of RootsChat is the enthusiatic membership, covering a wide range of skills and perspectives. In providing advice, members always seem to remember that they were beginners once - no question is treated with contempt.

Genes Reunited logo

I must admit I scoffed at first, but Genes Reunited has been the most effective means of exchanging information about shared family connections, and for a very small annual fee.  The more information you place on your tree on the site, the better; the one (minor) down side was explaining to others how to find specific individual or groups of relatives on your tree when you give them access. And that's one of the main reasons I created this site. Having said that the new Tree Programme on Genes Reunited is a vast improvement, and while the Hot Matches function can be frustrating, it does, with perseverance, produce good leads to follow up.

Lost Cousins logo

Lost Cousins is an interesting site based on establishing common relatives from the 1881 census.  Think it is still free to register.

Curious Fox logo

Curious Fox is another interesting and less well known site, concentrating on links relating to places.

UK Genealogy Interests Directory

A new-ish site allowing you to register your surname interests and make contact with others sharing your research interests

Family Search logo

Family Search provides the 1881 census, IGI and more, not forgetting the availability of free genealogical software through Personal Ancestral File, and details of family history centres near where you live.

Hugh Wallis's Genealogical Web pages

Access the IGI for specific parishes (baptism and marriages only). Well done Hugh!

Parish Locator

A small program that is a natural companion to High Wallis's site. Download it and you will be able to identify adjacent parishes.

FreeBMD logo

Provides Birth, Marriage and Death registrations transcribed by willing volunteers. Not yet comprehensive, but it's free.

FreeCEN logo

Provides a small amount of Census data transcribed by willing volunteers.  Not yet at all comprehensive, but it's free.

Essex Pubs

If you don't have family from Essex, you might not feel interested.  However it is a wonderful illustration of how enchanting and creative the web can be. Good material too for Essex and Suffolk on its sister site Essex 1841 .

Cyndis List logo

Cyndis List is a veritable goldmine of links and resources.

Historical Directories

Local and Trade Directories for England and Wales - various years. Excellent means to track down those relatives who were in trades (or if they were gentry, but that doesn't apply to me).

Kindred Trails logo

US Focused site, but you can add your own family history website to their register
